Five Tacky Wedding Mistakes to Avoid

Nov 02, 2011 No Comments by

Weddings can go from tasteful to tacky in the flick of a wand, and yes, that is one accessory that I recommend be reserved for Halloween, and not your wedding! Here are my top five rules for creating a classy wedding.

1. Avoid Cliches
Despite what Jordan might think, there are some fairytales wedding cliches that should stay on the page. Top of the list are a Cinderella carriage, releasing doves when you say I Do, and using pink for… Every. Single. Detail.

2. Don’t Overdo Children’s Party Themes
Balloons, party poppers, glitter and cupcakes are all lovely touches when used in moderation, but pair a balloon arch with bubble favours and you are at risk of throwing the most expensive kids party your guests have ever attended.

3. Keep it Covered, Dear
Call me a prude, but I don’t think there is anything tackier than a bride who could go from celebration to strip club without changing her outfit. Your wedding gown can be sexy and flattering without flashing all of your assets to a hundred or so of your friends and family.

4. Keep Your Cake Classy
These days there is enough choice in creative and unique wedding cake toppers that you shouldn’t ever allow that hideous plastic, cartoon couple from the fifties anywhere near your wedding cake. Online wedding retailers like American Bridal have plenty of cake toppers to choose from to help you add your own personal touch to your cake.

5. Everything in Moderation
When it comes to weddings remember the saying “You can have too much of a good thing”. Overdo any one design element and you can make your wedding seem tasteless. And while we are talking moderation, that stands for the champagne too…. nothing screams tacky like a blitzed bride!
