For any bride to be, choosing your gown should not be a fate you dread. Families and friends may mean well but it can become a personal spectator sport of opinions that can make you downright discouraged at times. There is no need to be but instead learn the simple secrets to flatter your figure. Once you know the tricks, you can make shopping for your bridal dress a high spot.

The key to looking great on your wedding day regardless of your size is to downplay the unpleasant features while highlighting your assets. Even plus size brides fall into different shape categories.

Let’s look at the pros of the different styles out there that will work for you. There are more options than you think.

Shapes and Cuts

The A-Line Gown

Cut: The A-line cut’s secret is with gown’s skirt. This style will draw attention away from the areas you do not want to accent. The A-line gown has vertical seams flowing from the shoulders and gradually widening with the skirt.

Pros:

• Disguises the tummy, bottom and hips
• Balances torso with upper body
• Adds curves
• Gives a taller and slimmer appearance

The Cinderella Ball Gown

Cut: The ball gown is characterized by a fitted bodice, a cinched waistline and a full skirt. This style works best for the hourglass figure with a determined waist. Make the dress a strapless ball gown if you are pear shaped.

Pros:

• Hides hips
• Highlights bust
• Accents waistline

Empire Styling

Cut: If you have thick waistline and are small on top and narrow in the lower half, then an attractive style is the Empire silhouette. The hallmark of the empire style gown is its high waistline, directly below the bust line. The dress then directs itself into a slender and graceful skirt.

Pros:

• Disguises thick waists and large tummies
• Plays up small busts
• Gives an illusion of height

Princess Line

Cut: The Princess cut is similar to the A-line gown but with the framing of it slightly more fitted. Vertical panels follow the natural shape of body while flattering the lower portion of the body with a gradual flaring skirt. This can be slimming for a pear-shaped type.

Pros:

• Minimizes hips
• Hides tummy
• Creates a long, lean look

Other Shape Guidelines:

• When looking at necklines, if you are seeking to highlight your décolletage area, then look for sweetheart, scoop, keyhole, or v-neck lines.
• Stay clear of off-shoulder necklines if you want to avoid making your shoulders and arms look too broad.
• Go for a wrap or stole if you are self-conscious about your arms.
• Avoid sleeveless or strapless gowns if they make you feel awkward.

Fabrics

Fabrics also play an important role in your dress to be a success. Avoid unforgiving clingy fabric like jersey and crepe, and bulky fabrics like heavy satin and velvet. The latter will only add bulk. Look for lighter weight fabrics, such as chiffon, silk shantung, or light-weight satin.

Still not sure what you should look for in a gown? A universal rule of thumb is to opt for an A-Line silhouette. This classic style will make any full size lady stunning.

And finally, always choose a gown that flatters your individual style and personality too. Happy shopping!
